Green Baby Care

The skin is our largest organ and some chemicals can pass through and enter the bloodstream where potential health hazards are limitless. Other chemicals can cause skin irritations, which in turn make it easier for chemicals to get through and into the blood stream. Children are particularly vulnerable because their skin is more porous and their ability to detoxify is limited.

Tips on Greening your baby care products:

	1. Less is more. Babies don’t really get dirty, a very gentle soap and water is usually all that is needed and is the healthiest option.

	2. Avoid powders. The tiny particles can become airborne and then inhaled, which can do damage to babies’ delicate respiratory systems.

	3. If you wouldn’t eat it (or at least recognize and be able to pronounce the ingredients) don’t put it on your baby. Triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, and "methyl", "propyl", "butyl" and "ethyl" parabens aren’t just hard to pronounce they are harsh (and even toxic) additives routinely found in skincare products.

	4. Fragrance is a big no-no. Fragrances are a concern in baby products where they routinely hide, often even in products labeled as “unscented.” Since scents become airborne, they are a danger for babies anywhere in the house. The large majority of fragrances (those not specifically stated as coming from 100% essential oils) are synthetic and created with a combination of chemicals that are not required to be listed in the ingredients. Most contain phthalates, which are suspected to cause cancer, disrupt hormones, and cause reproductive system birth defects.

Wishing Penny Product Review

Thank you to Jamaise from Wishing Penny blog for the great review! Here's what she has to say about our produts.

These natural products are truly a treat. As you can see above, my nieces and I are all decked out in our natural chocolate facial mask. The smell was so wonderful I worried little tongues might want to taste. So I checked the ingredients and that was fine - everything contained in the mask was safe to eat. I love that. And I was right the girls did get a taste!

Our skin was nice and fresh afterwards and although the girls' skin is always bright and glowing, it left my skin exactly that and feeling taut. I really enjoyed the treatment and I really think the scent while it was drying was a mood lifter as well!

I also got to try the Gourmet Lip Gloss and Loose Mineral Eye Shadow. I LOVE the lip gloss. I'm picky about my lip gloss - it has to feel right and this was perfect with a nice natural color. I don't wear much eye shadow either, yet a light dusting of this mineral shadow perfectly offset my eyes.

The best part about Gourmet Body Treats products is that their products are health and environmentally conscious.

Cosmetics for Rosacea

Does your skin look red even when you haven’t been out in the sun? A flushed complexion can have a variety of causes – the most common being a skin disorder called rosacea. This is a condition where the blood vessels in the face dilate easily causing the skin to appear redder than normal. A flushed complexion that appears out of nowhere should be checked out by a doctor since certain medical conditions can cause the density of blood cells in the blood stream to rise causing the skin to appear red and flushed. Here are some tips on how to deal with a rosacea complexion.

Cover a rosacea complexion: Choose the right foundation

Choosing the right foundation can make an enormous difference when it comes to how a rosacea complexion looks. When makeup shopping choose a base makeup or foundation that has yellow undertones to offset some of the redness. You can also use a green tinted concealer to mask the redness in areas that need additional coverage. Follow up with a dusting of loose mineral powder with yellow tones to give additional coverage and reduce shine. A natural mineral powder works well for this purpose and gives a light, pretty finish.

Cover a rosacea complexion: Go light on the blush and lipstick

To cover a rosacea complexion, choose a powder blush that has golden undertones and apply it lightly. You already have enough red in your skin, so there’s no point in going heavy on the cheek color Another option is to skip the blush entirely and use a light dusting of bronzer on your cheeks instead. Choose a shade of lipstick that has gold or copper undertones rather than reds or pinks which will only accentuate the ruddiness. One to try Gourmet Lipgloss in Apricot

Cover a rosacea complexion: Draw attention to your eyes.

Take the focus off of skin that’s too red by accentuating your eyes. The best eye shadow shades for a rosacea complexion are in the gold and copper family. Browns and beiges also work well. Further accentuate eyes by applying a brown liner and a layer of mascara.

	Tips for Rosacea

If your skin is flushed because you have rosacea, avoid triggers that can make skin redder such as alcohol, spicy foods, and caffeinated beverages. When you cleanse your face don’t exfoliate or scrub too aggressively or use products that increase redness such as alpha-hydroxy-acids or retinoic acids.

It can be a challenge having a rosacea complexion, but the right foundation and makeup colors can make all the difference. Choose them wisely.

Do Hair Vitamins Work

Nothing can enhance the appearance of a person more than having a beautiful head of hair. No wonder so many people are obsessed with keeping their hair looking its very best. In the pursuit of the perfect head of hair, some people spend their hard earned money on a bottle of vitamins for hair hoping they’ll make it grow faster or look healthier. Are hair vitamins and nutritional supplements good for hair or are they a waste of money?

While it’s tempting to buy into the promises that a particular vitamin or supplement is good for hair growth and health, there’s very little science behind the claims that a particular supplement or vitamin can enhance the appearance of hair. You do need vitamins and minerals for hair health, but most people get sufficient amounts of the vitamins and minerals they need for healthy hair through diet and there’s little evidence that megadoses of vitamins or supplements are good for hair health.

One nutritional supplement that’s often advertised as being good for hair is biotin. Biotin is “B” vitamin that most people get sufficient quantities of in their diet since it’s found in a wide range of foods ranging from meat and dairy products to vegetables. The manufacturers of vitamins for hair claim that biotin helps to promote hair growth and can enhance hair thickness. Many people order expensive biotin supplements believing that these supplements are good for hair.

While it’s well documented that people who have biotin deficiencies can have hair loss, there’s no evidence that adding additional biotin to the diet in the absence of a deficiency can enhance hair growth or thickness. Two situations where a biotin deficiency might occur is during pregnancy and with consumption of large quantities of raw egg whites. Raw egg whites contain a protein that binds biotin making it less available to the body. Diabetics, epileptics, and the elderly are also at higher risk of a biotin deficiency.

Are there certain types of diets that are good for hair? Since hair is composed of around ninety percent protein, it’s important to get sufficient quantities of the essential amino acids through diet to serve as building blocks for healthy hair growth. A protein deficiency can cause hair loss as can malnutrition from caloric restriction. If you’re eating a vegetarian or vegan diet, reassess how much protein you’re taking in if your hair is thinning. Keep in mind that there’s no evidence that consuming excessive quantities of protein are good for hair health. It’s also important to get enough essential fatty acids in the diet to maintain hair health, particularly the omega-3’s found in fish oil.

The bottom line? If you’re concerned about hair loss or thinning, don’t waste your hard earned money on supplements that are claimed to be good for hair. The best hair vitamin is a good diet with sufficient but not excessive amounts of protein and essential fatty acids. If you’re eating a good diet and your hair is still thinning, see your doctor. Certain conditions such as an underactive thyroid, anemia, stress, hormone imbalance, and even medications can cause hair loss and thinning. You doctor can also check for a vitamin B12 or iron deficiency which can also cause hair loss in some situations.

Summertime Skin Tips

During the hot summer months, do you constantly deal with shiny skin and makeup that does a disappearing act? When you just can’t stay indoors all day long during the hottest time of the year, here are some helpful tips that can keep you looking your best all summer long.

Make time for hydration: Your skin needs to be properly hydrated to look its best. Keep a bottle of water with you and sip throughout the day. Remember, if you’re out in the heat, you’ll need to drink even more water. Aim for 64 ounces during a normal day. Make sure that you’re drinking enough water in addition to any other beverages you may consume. Drinking 64 ounces of tea or soda is not the same as drinking water!

Block those rays: Before applying makeup, make it part of your daily routine to use sunscreen. There are so many different sunscreens on the market today. For example, if you deal with oily skin, you can find one with mattifying power. Not only will you be protecting your skin, but creating a helpful base for the rest of your makeup.

Don’t over wash: While it may seem beneficial to wash your face multiple times during the day to rid it of oil, doing so can actually cause your facial skin to generate additional oil. You may end up with dry patches from washing too frequently. Stick with a gentle facial soap, twice a day at most.

Double-duty moisturizer: It may seem like an odd suggestion to apply moisturizer if you’re already battling oily skin; however, if you’re frequently exposed to the sun’s rays or chlorinated water, your skin needs hydration. Choose a moisturizer that is appropriate for your skin type, and a lighter formula than your normal wintertime moisturizer. Apply sparingly.

Less is more: During the summer, makeup is more likely to melt away. While you can give your makeup greater staying power with appropriate oil-free bases, (sunscreen or oil-free moisturizer, for example) it’s also a good idea to wear makeup sparingly. A more “natural” look is easier to maintain in the heat, and also looks casual and fresh.

With these tips, beautiful summertime skin can be yours!

Health Risks at The Nail Salon

A new short documentary explores the chemical world of the nail salon, and the health risks associated with them.

Do you know it is legal for cosmetics manufacturers to use chemicals linked to cancer and reproductive harm in their products?

These toxic chemicals are used in nail salons every day and as a result, nail salon workers are at risk. It’s time to STAND UP for workers rights!

The Safe Cosmetics Act is a piece of legislation that will help protect workers in nail salons from unsafe chemicals in salon products. The legislation will also give these workers more information about the chemicals used in the products that they work with everyday. In order for this to pass, we need you to TAKE ACTION!

Workers can and should be protected from exposure to toxic chemicals in their workplaces.

Tell your Congress member to protect nail salon worker health by supporting safe cosmetics legislation! Sign the Petition!
